Dressed to Kill, Dressed to Till
Lot 81:
Oil on ticking, 30 x 24 inches, affixed to original strainer, unlined; within reproduction frame, unlined. An itinerant New England painter, possibly Zedekiah Belknap as some have suggested, painted this Maine lady dressed in a green silk dress with “leg-of-mutton sleeves”, which was the height of fashion in the late 1820s. Said to have come from a Portland, Maine estate, it was purchased at a local auction in 2017. Cleaned, conserved (including a mend and inpainting to a 2-inch tear near the upper edge and one small spot of inpainting on the figure itself) and framed the following year. With conservation report.
