Both Late 19th-Early 20th Century. The container carved in softwood as a whimsical smiling clown wearing a green and unpainted pointed cap centered with three vertical pompoms, his bi-colored black and unpainted coat decorated with yellow pompoms, the wide unpainted collar painted with alternating green stripes and yellow daubs, fitted with blue-green shoes, height 7 3/8 inches; the bottle painted in alternating black, orange, ochre and green bands, the opening carved with a wooden “cork” that may be removable (there are some tiny gaps around the edges). Height 11 1/8 inches. Condition: The container with a little over a ½- inch crack at the rim on the back of the container, normal wear and marks to the painted surfaces; the bottle with normal scattered paint losses and wear, 3 ½- inch vertical crack down the neck, shoulders and side with some separation, ½- inch shallow gouge on the side.
