Depicted holding the reins of a horse, oil on canvas, 31 x 23.5 inches. In a period gilt frame, 37 x 30.5 inches. Relined, some paint loss.
Obtained from decendants of Robert Lauent. This item was a prized possesion of Hamilton Easter Fields (1873-1922). A pioneer in collecting American folk art, Fields was a well known artist, teacher and critic as well as a dealer of antiques in the late nineteenth early twentieth century. This item was bequeathed to arist Robert Lauent (1890-1970), who was Field’s protege and life long friend. Years later, Robert Laurent founded the Hamilton Easter Field Foundation
