Fine African Art Auction
Lot 371:
Height 26 inches.
This magical statue belonged to the Bateke people of Congo. Usually magical statues do not acquire their power until after the addition of ingredients, which might be anything from particles of the earth from a certain area, dead flies, hair nail paring and oil rubbed on it, most of the time, in many statues, cavities were hollowed out in the abdomen, breast, back or head, to be filled with magical substances and sometimes sealed with a mirror. The statue can be used for family protection.
