Largest 9.5 inches. Dating to the 9 th century; Igbo-Ukwu was the earliest known west African society to make extensive use of copper and its alloys. From the 11th to 15th century, Ife peoples used copper for bracelets, anklets, rings,collars, ceremonial axes. However, the most extensive use of copper was by the Katangese peoples of Congo because of vast deposits found there. These crosses were traded as currency and the values varied but standardized within the areas.
