Stingray Headdress from Ijaw (Ijo), Nigeria. 19th century Stingray Headdress from Ijaw (Ijo), Nigeria. A water spirit in form of a Stingray. The mask was worn over the head horizontally, so that when the wearer walked into the water or river to appease or petition the spirits, the mask appeared to float in the water.
