Fine African Art Auction
Lot 188:
Length 19 inches.
Stools and headrests have been used for many centuries and have been found in varieties of forms and styles depending on the culture it represents. They are typically carried by the owner or the owner’s guide to events and upon which they sat, other symbols of stools and headrests are often a gesture of affection. Just as in the western world they may use engagement rings or other symbolic jewelry. Stools mean that they have a place to sit in your heart. While gifting of headrests may mean that they have you as a resting place, you are saying that they can trust you.
