Width 17 inches. Congo. Kwele, found in the region between Congo and Gabon, they specialize in making beautiful heart shaped anthropomorphic masks and ornaments. Some with concave faces painted white and sometimes pink. These masks are called pipibuze and represent spirits from afterworld. They have half closed eyes and a serene expression. Generically called gon. The kwele masks were used during youth initiation rites.
