Lot 293:
Carved from a single block of Zelkova wood, traces of gilt throughout the statue. Height 38 inches. This piece is one of a set of four that was carved to guard the entrance of a Buddhist temple circa 1350.
PROVENANCE:
Purchased by the consignor in Kyoto in the late 1990s, from a closed temple.
CONDITION:
In an exceptional state of preservation, with minor repairs and losses. Flames to the left of the halo have been removed, ax head with repaired break, some other minor losses throughout.
