THIS ITEM HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN WHILE WE AWAIT THE RESULTS OF SCIENTIFIC TESTING. IT WILL BE OFFERED AT A LATER DATE. NO BIDS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THIS TIME.
The black and gold flag is approximately 5 feet by 6 feet with the bald eagle clasping the American shield appropriately draped with black mourning crepe and surmounted on a cloud. The E PLURIBUS UNUM banner is also on a black ribbon.
Affirmed by the U S Military Academy at West Point, the flag is a U S regulation flag and not a local or state militia flag.
The flag is from an early period dating from the post Revolutionary War period to approximately the Mexican-American War Or Civil Was.
Research so far in this period has resulted in only one mention of a flag of mourning in funeral processions; the funeral in Philadelphia for President George Washington.
Since the flag is constructed of 8 pieces of narrow silk, the fabric, dye, paint, and construction are all being examined and tested by the firm of Scientific Analysis Of Fine Art in order to narrow down the time period of the flag.Test results are forthcoming shortly and will be updated as soon as possible.
