Inscribed "M. Berge, late Ramsden." Length of main section 26 inches, case 31 x 4 x 7 inches. A note from Philip W. Pfiefer of ‘Le Cabinet Scientifique’, 900 Madison Ave, NY reads: "A three inch refracting telescope on stand, signed Berge, late Ramsden, in its original fitted mahogany case. John Berge was an apprentice to Peter Dollard in London from 1756 to 1773. He remained in his employ until 1791 when he joined Jesse Ramsden. He became chief workman until Ramsden’s death in 1800 when he took over the studio and ran it until his death in 1808."
