Circa 1865-1895. An eagle of exceptional form, in good condition, which would originally have adorned the pilot house of a steam powered tug or steam boat. The back and out swept wings, the long neck, the detailed crested eyes, the beak with stylized over-bite, and the feather carving suggest a strong connection with the early marine carving of John Hale Bellamy. Dimensions: length 30.5 inches, height 22 inches, width across wings 21.5 inches. White pine; original wrought iron wing reinforcement. Condition: Intact; with weathered gold leaf surface; restorations to base.
