Dressed to Kill, Dressed to Till
An evening dress tailcoat that appears to have been in the stages of alteration at the time of Commander Horace Elmer’s death in April 1898, being stripped of its sleeve lace and buttons, possibly to install ones of new form after having assumed command of the Mosquito Fleet. The loose naval buttons and stripped lace and stars accompany this coat, allowing for full restoration. Provenance: by descent in the Elmer family to noted maritime collector Welles Henderson; acquired from Henderson Collection in 2008.
