Watercolor, gouache and graphite on woven paper, 11 ¾ x 9 inches, pressure mounted within glazed, 13 x 10 ½ in. wooden frame. Circa 1960s study of US enlisted artillerymen made for Michael J. McAfee, the late curator of the U. S. Military Academy, West Point. Hugh Charles McBarron (1900-1993) has been called “The Dean of American Military Artists” and was a leading authority on historic costume, especially military dress. He was also a highly successful commercial artist and originator of such iconic pop-culture characters as Captain Midnight, the Jolly Green Giant and Buster Brown.
