Buyer's premium: 20%

A straight-bladed, “cut and thrust” sword of the type known as a spadroon, with a 30 ¼ in. L x 1 3/16 in. W, doubled-edged blade of diamond profile, single fullered and ending in a “spear” point. It has a gilded brass, “five-ball” decorated, stirrup-hilt, ending in a pillow-shaped pommel, with a reeded grip with an inset centered band of gilded brass, on which is engraved within an oval on the right side the device of the East India Company, a rampant lion holding a crown. This is a fighting arm favored by both the naval and military officers of “John Company.” The blade is marked “Solingen” and dates to earlier in the 18th century and is probably a period rehilting of a blade carried earlier in service by his father or grandfather, a common practice at this time. Overall length: 36 ¼ inches.
