Unknown artist, after Sir Thomas Lawrence, P.R.A. (1769-1830),

PORTRAIT OF ARTHUR WELLESLEY, 1ST DUKE OF WELLINGTON, KG, KB, MP

Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches, unlined on original strainer and within original gilt, composition frame. Probably painted in the 1830s by an unidentified artist, this work was copied from the Sir Thomas Lawrence’s 1820 portrait of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). The painting shows the victor of the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns wearing the simple campaign dress he adopted during the Napoleonic Wars, a short cloak thrown over his blue frock coat and white military vest, the Spanish Order of the Golden Fleece suspended from his neck. Some perforations to canvas and loss of pigment, with significant damage to the frame molding, some loose pieces stored separately.
