Yoruba Gelede headdress. Republic of Benin, late 19th century.
Height 22 inches, width 11 inches. Losses to the ears and collar, cracks throughout the piece.
The Gelede society honors the creative and potentially destructive powers of women, especially those of elderly women (referred to as " our mothers" those identified with sorcery) at annual festivals marked by elaborate dance, rituals and performances, paired male and female masks worn by men and appears in rich elaborate costumes
