(Maine, Massachusetts 1835-1890), oil on canvas, 14 x 10 inches, signed lower left and signed, titled, and dated 1878 on reverse, original frame, small canvas puncture and loss on frame. Schumacher was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1853. He was a painter, trompe l’oeil mural artist, and church decorator who settled in Portland, Maine and later in Boston. This piece must have been painted on a return visit to Germany.
