Thomas Luny (British, 1759-1837). A Frigate Reefed Down, Passing the South Foreland Light off Dover. Oil on canvas, 15 x 20 inches; signed and dated ‘Luny 1818’ on lower left; within a giltwood frame. Thomas Luny studied under and assisted noted marine artist Francis Holman. Luny exhibited his first work at the Society of Artists when only sixteen. By 1781, he was working out of his studio in Stepney, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1780-1793. By 1807, he was in Teignmouth, where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life. Today he is recognized as one of England’s most acclaimed marine painters, with works in museums throughout England, Europe, and America.
