Mary Bradish Titcomb (1858-1927). "Lawn Cottage / Sebago Lake", 1892. Graphite on paper, 7 1/16 x 10 3/4 inches, inscribed "Lawn Cottage / Sebago Lake" in the artist’s hand on lower left; conservation-mounted in frame with window mat. Mary Bradish Titcomb, leading woman artist of the Boston School of Impressionists in the late 19th and early 20th century, was born in Windham, New Hampshire, in 1858. Her formal art education was at the Boston Normal Art School and later, the Boston Museum School where she studied under Boston Impressionists Edmund C. Tarbell, Frank W. Benson and later, Philip Hale. For many years she was an art teacher in the Boston area, eventually quitting in 1901 to devote herself to painting full-time. She completed a number of portraits during her life, but is best remembered for her impressionist landscapes and coastal villages of New England. In the early 1890s Titcomb summered in coastal Maine, prior to establishing her studio and home residence in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
