Charles A. Sommer (American, 1829-1894). Kaaterskill Creek with a Storm Approaching from the Catskills. Oil on canvas, 21 1/4 x 36 inches, signed on lower left; within gilt reproduction Hudson Valley frame. Born in Germany in 1829, Charles Augustus Sommer is known for his paintings of the Catskill and Adirondack regions. While details of Sommer’s life are sketchy, it is known that Sommer maintained a studio in New York City at 896 Broadway between 1867 and 1872, working as a landscape painter. Sommer participated with notice in the annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design between 1868 and 1871, as well as the Leeds Gallery. A December 1871 exhibition at Goupil’s included works by prominent American artists including Martin Johnson Heade, A.T. Bricher, William Hart, James M. Hart, Samuel Colman, and William Trost Richards, as well as a landscape "of the highest order" by Sommer.
